Meet Truth
Truth has its root in the character of God. As such, it is singular (absolute), unchangeable and eternal. Truth is not an abstract concept, but rather the very essence of God. God’s word is truth. Christ, the word that became flesh, rightfully declared “I am the way, the truth and the life” John 14:6. The Holy Spirit, also known as the Spirit of Truth, fulfills Jesus’ promise “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” John 16:13
Truth does not bend to the cultural whims of the world. Truth is truth for everyone, whether you choose to believe it or not. An individual cannot define it for themselves. To do so places you in opposition to the truth. The Apostle Paul warns about those who “exchanged the truth about God for a lie.” Romans 1:25 He goes on to describe them further in 2 Timothy 3:7 as people who are “always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.”
Truth has its opposition in lies and error. In 1 John 4:6, John writes about the “Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood” with the later referring to the spirit of the antichrist “being from the world and therefore speak[ing] from the viewpoint of the world .” Jesus, teaching in John 8:44, describes Satan as a liar who speaks from his own nature – he ‘does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him.”
Looking closely at the above verses, you can see that truth is more than a character trait. Truth requires a personal indwelling that begins with an encounter with Jesus. Hebrews 1:3 refers to Jesus as “the radiance of the glory of God and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” Truth is not about accumulating knowledge, but living in relationship with Jesus.
This relationship with Christ brings the indwelling of the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of truth. Truth personified in the Spirit works within you to reveal the personification of truth in Jesus Christ. As the Spirit works to reveal the Son, he is transforming your likeness to that of Christ. Your perspective and purpose become aligned with Christ’s which are in accord with the Father.
Jesus prayed for his disciples: “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” John 17:17 Yet a few verses later, He echoed that prayer for all believers “that they may be one as we are one – I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity.” John 17:22-23. Truth sanctifies and sets apart the believer, through love and grace, into unity with the Trinity to the glory of the Father.
Knowing truth is knowing Christ. Experience the indwelling of truth. Abide and grow by His presence. Speak the truth in love. Proclaim Jesus full of grace and truth. Truth has a face, a voice and nail-scarred hands. Jesus says “you will know the truth and the truth will get you free”. And you are free indeed!
Do you know truth?
