Uncommon Peace

The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, also is a peace which defies full description.  At its core, this peace is a deeply profound calm that is rooted in the unchangeable, steadfast qualities of God.  It reveals itself as an inner tranquility and strength undisturbed by circumstances, tribulations or emotions.  In John 14:27, Jesus declares “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.  Not as the world gives do I give to you.  Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

This peace also is a supernatural gift from God.  The apostle Paul includes peace as a fruit of the Spirit: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”  Galatians 5:22-23.  The Old Testament prophet Isaiah described this peace in a song: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.  Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.”  Isaiah 26:3-4.

While the peace of God does not promise an easy, trouble-free life, it does reassure us God is in control.  In fact, it seems to flourish in the midst of trials.  Paul admonishes us in Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.   And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

And it is through Jesus Christ that we can live in the peace of God.  Jesus proclaims, in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”  Ephesians 2:14 states, “He Himself is our peace.”  As we walk and live in Christ, His peace is both our light into the world and our strength according to His purpose.
