Comfort of God

The comfort of God can be described as the profound sense of strength, peace and well-being that flows from the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.  Expressed another way, it is experiencing the very presence of the Godhead walking with you.  The Greek word "comfort," paraklesis, means "to come alongside to help," reflecting the role of the Holy Spirit as the Paraclete or Comforter, who strengthens believers even before they cry out for help. This comfort is not merely emotional relief but a deep, sustaining strength that enables individuals to endure suffering and, in turn, comfort others who are in need.

The comfort of God is described in 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 where God is called "the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort," emphasizing that He is the ultimate source of consolation and support during trials.  These verses also admonish the believer “to comfort those in any trouble with the same comfort we ourselves received from God.” The gifts of God are to be freely given.

The Sermon on the Mount declares “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”   Matthew 5:4.    This statement is anchored not only in the assurance of Jesus to care for his flock – “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy ladened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28) – but also in the promise of His indwelling Spirit and His ultimate return “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:18

Not only does the Holy Spirit strengthen the faithful, but He intercedes on our behalf with the Father.  His reassurance of our status as children of God adds certainty to our future hope, called to His eternal glory by Jesus Christ.  “And God will wipe any every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying.  There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4

The comfort of God is then a present reality we can rely upon now, a secure, future hope, grounded in His unchangeable character, sovereign grace and endless love and a precious gift to be shared.
