An often-repeated verse from Scripture is that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Psalms 111:10; Proverbs 9:10   The “Fear of the Lord” spoken of here is a consuming awe and reverence of God.  It does not mean to be afraid of God.  Instead, you are to be mindful of the all-knowing power who not only conceived every detail of this physical universe, but who also merely spoke it into existence.

If you are honest with yourself, you cannot begin to understand the intelligence of design or infinite power you see manifest in the world around you.  How much less do you know about the stars and galaxies beyond our lone planet?

Yet, in your pride, you think you know what is best for your life and the lives of those around you. With your limited intellect and perspective, you dare challenge, or even completely ignore, the infinite God that created you. 

Instead, you should humble yourself before God and seek his wisdom.  James 1:5 provides a clear promise:  If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”  He alone can fill the empty longing you feel deep inside.  He alone gives purpose to your life and empowers you to live out that purpose.

Wisdom is not achieved by intelligence or knowledge alone, but by a life submitted to Christ.  If you do not know why you are here … if you do not know what you were created to do … ask!  Seek His advice and counsel.  Submit to His plans for your life.  Faithfully live according to His truth.   As you walk with Christ Jesus, He will be faithful to teach you wisdom.
