The “Fear of the Lord” spoken of here is a consuming awe and reverence of God.  It does not mean to be afraid of God.  Instead, we are to be mindful of the all-knowing power that not only conceived of every detail of this physical universe, but also merely spoke it into existence.

If we are honest with ourselves, none of us can begin to understand the intelligence of design or infinite power we see manifest in the world around us.  How much less do we know about the stars and galaxies beyond our lone planet?

Yet, in our pride, we think we know what is best for our lives and the lives of those around us.  With our limited intellect and perspective, we dare challenge, or even completely ignore, the infinite God that created us.

Instead, we should humble ourselves before God and seek his wisdom.  He alone can fill the empty longing each of us feel deep inside.  He alone gives purpose to our lives and empowers us to live out that purpose.
