Where Will You Spend Eternity ?
Your Purpose
Most people, at some point in their life, question what their purpose is. Or as Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church titled one of his books “What on earth am I here for?” While you may have a natural gift or passion that leads to a worldly profession, this still does not answer the question of your eternal purpose – “What did God create you to do?’.
Scripture tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:31 that your overarching eternal purpose is to glorify God. “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” When Jesus was asked “What is the greatest commandment” He replied “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. “ Matthew 22:37-39
From these verses, you see that you are not only to know and love God, but you are to love others. Later, Jesus upped the ante at the last supper in John 13:34 when He stated “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (Emphasis added)
This “new” command speaks to another eternal purpose – to be transformed into the likeness of Christ. Romans 8:28-29 reveals that “God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose … to be conformed to the image of His Son.” Becoming like Christ is the central transformative purpose of your life.
These changes inside yourself also have an outward reflection. “I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit — fruit that will last. John 15:16. In fact, you are chosen to do good works specifically prepared for you to do. God rarely reveals your entire life purpose at once, instead choosing to reveal it one step at a time to be lived out in faith.
Yet, one clear purpose is the Great Commission to “Go and make disciples.” Matthew 28:19 God will use your unique gifts in the opportunities He provides to further His Kingdom. He asks only that you walk daily in obedience and trust in His guidance. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13
