Obedience
To many in the world, the term “obedience” implies a restrictive, confining and joyless endurance under unpleasant rule. Yet to a true Christian, it is just the opposite. It is the most freeing of all experiences embracing a far richer life. Obedience is necessary for a relationship with God, creating a beautiful alignment with His character and providing a genuine joy and delight for the reborn soul.
Obedience does not earn your salvation, but it is a fruit of it. John 14:15 declares “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” Obedience, with thanksgiving, is how you demonstrate your love for God, your submission to Christ’s lordship and your dependence on the Holy Spirit to live out your life of discipleship.
Obedience is not just necessary for a close walk with the Lord, but it reflects the beauty of God. It acknowledges His wisdom and design of Creation. In obedience, you participate in the life of Christ, releasing the burden of autonomy and aligning oneself with the Will of the Father. Even Christ “humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death.” Philippians 2:8
Your acts of obedience mirror the trust Jesus had in the Father. Moreover, “it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13 Obedience transforms the heart to delight in God’s will. When you delight in the Lord, your obedience leads to a heart that desires what God desires, fulfilling the promise of having your heart’s desires met. “If you keep My commandments… My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” John 15:10–11
Obedience illuminates the pathway to joy, peace, and deep fellowship with God through Christ Jesus. The choice is yours. Groping in the darkness of disobedience or enjoying the light of freedom in Christ Jesus.
