The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity – fully God, co-equal with the Father and the Son. Like the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit is eternal, omnipresent, omniscient and holy. In creation, the Spirit hovers over the waters, bringing order out of the formless void. Throughout the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon select individuals to carry out specific tasks. All that became available to anyone with the coming of Jesus.
Now, one of His primary functions is the rebirth of the believer. The Holy Spirit indwells your being, not to improve you, but to form a new creation born again of Spirit. John 3:5-6 describes Jesus speaking to Nicodemus, “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of Spirit is spirit.”
Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit as “the Helper” or the Advocate” in John 14:16. It was at the Last Supper that Jesus revealed to his disciples He would send the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of truth – to be with them. “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:26
First, the Holy Spirit awakens the sinner, convicting you of your sins and directing repentance through faith in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit, then, guides and teaches the believer. He enlightens the Word of God, making its truth clear and helping you discern the will of God. The Holy Spirit also empowers you for service and witness, enabling you to live in obedience and to share the Gospel with others.
When you are confronted with problems and trials and do not know what or how to pray, the Holy Spirit intercedes for you with the Father with groans too deep for words. His presence comforts, reassures and strengthens you. He shields you from Satan’s ploys. His power enables victory over sin, guiding you in obedience and shaping your heart’s deepest desires.
In doing so, the Holy Spirit is the very presence of God transforming you into the image of Christ. Aligning your will with that of the Father’s, the Holy Spirit guards you against deception, calling you to unite with other believers in the body of Christ. Both the work of the Spirit within the individual and, collectively, within the Church, all serve to glorify Jesus. He bears witness that believers are children of God, reconciled to the Father through the blood of Christ.
