Pillar 2 - Growing in Faith
Gain Wisdom
Scripture shows you how to find wisdom.
The world equates wisdom with intelligence, experience, or education — but Scripture locates its beginning somewhere most people would never think to look.

What Scripture Says About Gaining Wisdom
An often-repeated verse from Scripture is that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Psalms 111:10; Proverbs 9:10 The “Fear of the Lord” spoken of here is a consuming awe and reverence of God. It does not mean to be afraid of God. Instead, you are to be mindful of the all-knowing power who not only conceived every detail of this physical universe, but who also merely spoke it into existence.
If you are honest with yourself, you cannot begin to understand the intelligence of design or infinite power you see manifest in the world around you. How much less do you know about the stars and galaxies beyond our lone planet?
Yet, in your pride, you think you know what is best for your life and the lives of those around you. With your limited intellect and perspective, you dare challenge, or even completely ignore, the infinite God that created you.
Instead, you should humble yourself before God and seek his wisdom. James 1:5 provides a clear promise: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” He alone can fill the empty longing you feel deep inside. He alone gives purpose to your life and empowers you to live out that purpose.
Wisdom is not achieved by intelligence or knowledge alone, but by a life submitted to Christ. If you do not know why you are here … if you do not know what you were created to do … ask! Seek His advice and counsel. Submit to His plans for your life. Faithfully live according to His truth. As you walk with Christ Jesus, He will be faithful to teach you wisdom.
What Others Ask
Q. What does the Bible say about gaining wisdom?
A. James 1:5 gives one of Scripture's most direct promises: 'If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.' Biblical wisdom is not merely intelligence — it is the practical skill of living in alignment with God's character, rooted in reverence for Him (Proverbs 9:10).
Q. What is the difference between wisdom and knowledge in the Bible?
A. Knowledge is the accumulation of information; wisdom is knowing what to do with it. A person can be highly educated and deeply unwise. Biblical wisdom applies truth to real life — it is the skill of navigating relationships, decisions, and suffering in a way that honors God. It flows from knowing God personally, not merely knowing about Him.
Q. How do I pray for wisdom according to James 1:5?
A. James 1:5-6 says to ask in faith, without doubting — confident that God gives wisdom generously. This is not a formula but a posture: humility before God, acknowledging you need His perspective, and trusting He will provide it. Wisdom in prayer often comes not as an immediate answer but through the Word, godly counsel, and Spirit-led discernment over time.
Q. What does Proverbs say the beginning of wisdom is?
A. Proverbs 9:10 declares: 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.' The 'fear of the Lord' is not terror but reverent awe — the posture of a creature before its Creator. Wisdom begins not with a technique but with a relationship: knowing who God is and orienting your life accordingly.
Q. How do I grow in biblical wisdom for everyday decisions?
A. Wisdom grows through consistent immersion in Scripture (Psalm 119:105), prayer, and the counsel of mature believers (Proverbs 15:22). It also grows through experience — particularly through trials that expose our dependence on God (James 1:2-4). Wisdom is not accumulated overnight; it is formed through a life of seeking God in both the Word and the moments.
Digging Deeper Introduction
Wisdom is one of the most valuable treasures in life, far more precious than material wealth or worldly success. It is a gift from God, which He does not withhold when asked. At the beginning of his reign, Solomon was offered his heart’s desire by God. Solomon asked for “a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” 1 Kings 3:9 Solomon chose wisdom over wealth, power and a long life.
James 1:5 speaks to God’s promise about wisdom: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” However, faith is required. The following verse in James continues with: “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.” v 6-8
Perhaps the most familiar refrain about wisdom, found in Proverbs 9:10 and Psalms 111:10, is: “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Here the “fear of the Lord” means to revere and hold in awe His holiness, submitting to His authority and living in full awareness of your accountability to Him. Proverbs 8:13 explains that “To fear the Lord is to hate evil.” These truths alter your perspective of everything else.
