What Scripture Says About Your Purpose
Most people, at some point in their life, question what their purpose is. Or as Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church titled one of his books “What on earth am I here for?” While you may have a natural gift or passion that leads to a worldly profession, this still does not answer the question of your eternal purpose – “What did God create you to do?’.
Scripture tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:31 that your overarching eternal purpose is to glorify God. “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” When Jesus was asked “What is the greatest commandment” He replied “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. “ Matthew 22:37-39
From these verses, you see that you are not only to know and love God, but you are to love others. Later, Jesus upped the ante at the last supper in John 13:34 when He stated “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (Emphasis added)
This “new” command speaks to another eternal purpose – to be transformed into the likeness of Christ. Romans 8:28-29 reveals that “God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose … to be conformed to the image of His Son.” Becoming like Christ is the central transformative purpose of your life.
These changes inside yourself also have an outward reflection. “I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit — fruit that will last. John 15:16. In fact, you are chosen to do good works specifically prepared for you to do. God rarely reveals your entire life purpose at once, instead choosing to reveal it one step at a time to be lived out in faith.
Yet, one clear purpose is the Great Commission to “Go and make disciples.” Matthew 28:19 God will use your unique gifts in the opportunities He provides to further His Kingdom. He asks only that you walk daily in obedience and trust in His guidance. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13

What Others Ask
Q. What is my purpose in life according to the Bible?
A. The Westminster Catechism puts it memorably: 'The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.' Scripture describes purpose as knowing God, being conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29), and participating in His redemptive work in the world. Purpose begins with relationship with God — everything else flows from there
Q. Why did God create me?
A. Revelation 4:11 says all things were created for God's pleasure and will. You were not an accident or an afterthought — you were created intentionally, in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), for relationship with Him. Ephesians 2:10 adds that you are 'God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works' He prepared in advance for you.
Q. How do I find meaning when life feels empty or pointless?
A. The emptiness you feel is not a malfunction — it is a signal. Ecclesiastes chronicles a man who pursued every source of meaning apart from God and found only vanity. The conclusion: 'Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man' (Ecclesiastes 12:13). Meaning is not discovered; it is restored through the One who made you.
Q. Does God have a specific plan for my individual life?
A. Yes. Jeremiah 29:11 says God has plans for you — 'plans to prosper ou and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.' Psalm 139 describes God as knowing every detail of your life before you were born. Your specific calling unfolds within the larger purpose of knowing Christ, being transformed by Him, and reflecting His love to others.
Q. How does knowing Christ give me purpose that the world cannot?
A. The world offers purpose tied to achievement, relationships, or pleasure — all of which are temporary and fragile. Christ offers purpose rooted in eternal identity: you are known, chosen, and loved by God regardless of your performance. That foundation does not collapse when circumstances do. It is the only purpose that can hold the weight of a human life.
Digging Deeper Introduction
The Bible describes each person’s purpose as having both universal and individual dimensions. All of these combine to give intentionality to God’s plan for each person, allowing for His will to be done through the uniqueness each person brings. You are designed to do what only you can do in a way only you can do it.
Your most basic purpose is to know and to glorify God. This purpose not only becomes the foundation of your earthly works as a believer, but it extends into the eternal role assigned to you in heaven. You are called to know God, to love God and to walk in unity with God. Psalms 139:13-14 declares of God: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Extending this to eternity, your communion with God is described in John 17:3 “This is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”
You are called to love God and to love one another. Jesus instructed “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind … Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39 Your purpose was prepared for you, in Christ, to reveal a life aligned with God’s design. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
If this is true, you can not afford to ignore it.
