What Scripture Says About The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity – fully God, co-equal with the Father and the Son. Like the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit is eternal, omnipresent, omniscient and holy. In creation, the Spirit hovers over the waters, bringing order out of the formless void. Throughout the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon select individuals to carry out specific tasks. All that became available to anyone with the coming of Jesus.
Now, one of His primary functions is the rebirth of the believer. The Holy Spirit indwells your being, not to improve you, but to form a new creation born again of Spirit. John 3:5-6 describes Jesus speaking to Nicodemus, “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of Spirit is spirit.”
Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit as “the Helper” or the Advocate” in John 14:16. It was at the Last Supper that Jesus revealed to his disciples He would send the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of truth – to be with them. “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:26
First, the Holy Spirit awakens the sinner, convicting you of your sins and directing repentance through faith in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit, then, guides and teaches the believer. He enlightens the Word of God, making its truth clear and helping you discern the will of God. The Holy Spirit also empowers you for service and witness, enabling you to live in obedience and to share the Gospel with others.
When you are confronted with problems and trials and do not know what or how to pray, the Holy Spirit intercedes for you with the Father with groans too deep for words. His presence comforts, reassures and strengthens you. He shields you from Satan’s ploys. His power enables victory over sin, guiding you in obedience and shaping your heart’s deepest desires.
Plead the Holy Spirit constantly to be in the Father’s will doing His will. Plead hidden sin be revealed and released through your repentance. Plead the Spirit that seeds be planted, watered and bear much fruit. Plead strength and stamina in the face of Satan’s attacks. Plead comfort and peace for all afflicted or troubled. Plead rebirth for those lost.
In doing so, the Holy Spirit is the very presence of God transforming you into the image of Christ. Aligning your will with that of the Father’s, the Holy Spirit guards you against deception, calling you to unite with other believers in the body of Christ. Both the work of the Spirit within the individual and, collectively, within the Church, all serve to glorify Jesus. He bears witness that believers are children of God, reconciled to the Father through the blood of Christ. Do you plead the Holy Spirit?
What Others Ask
Q. What is the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian?
A. The Holy Spirit is God's personal presence within every believer (1 Corinthians 3:16). His roles include: convicting of sin, guiding into truth (John 16:13), producing the fruit of Christlike character (Galatians 5:22-23), empowering for witness (Acts 1:8), interceding in prayer (Romans 8:26-27), and confirming our identity as children of God (Romans 8:16).
Q. How does the Holy Spirit help us when we don't know how to pray?
A. Romans 8:26 says: 'The Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.' When we are too exhausted, confused, or broken to form prayer, the Spirit takes our wordless need before the Father. This is one of the most comforting truths in Scripture: even when we cannot pray, God prays for us through His Spirit within us.
Q. What does Romans 8:26-27 say about the Spirit's intercession?
A. Paul teaches that the Spirit intercedes for believers 'according to the will of God' — meaning the Spirit's prayer on our behalf is always aligned with the Father's purposes. We may not know what to ask; the Spirit knows perfectly. Our inarticulate groaning is taken up and translated into Spirit-formed prayer that reaches the Father fully and precisely.
Q. How do I learn to be led by the Holy Spirit?
A. Romans 8:14 says 'all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.' Learning this requires cultivating sensitivity through Scripture (the Spirit speaks through the Word), prayer (where we listen, not just speak), community (where the Spirit's correction comes through others), and a willingness to act on what you discern. Hearing increases with practice and submission.
Q. What does it mean to pray in the Spirit?
A. Ephesians 6:18 instructs believers to pray 'in the Spirit at all times.' This means praying with the Spirit's assistance — in alignment with His prompting, His priorities, and His power rather than merely our own impulse or habit. It is not a technique but a posture: remaining open to the Spirit's leading in what to pray, how to pray, and for whom.
Digging Deeper Introduction
Scripture presents the Holy Spirit as the third person of the Trinity – fully God, equal with the Father and the Son. The Spirit possesses divine attributes and performs divine works. The Spirit can be related to personally. The Holy Spirit’s relationship with Jesus was essential throughout His earthly ministry. Similarly, the Spirit is active in empowering you in every stage of your salvation just as the Spirit empowers the church. Ultimately, the Spirit’s purpose is glorifying Christ and conforming believers into His image.
The Holy Spirit was active in creation. Genesis 1:2 describes: “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Job 33:4 declares: “The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” The Spirit is the divine agent of creation and life. Throughout the Old Testament, the Spirit came upon individuals for specific reasons. In Exodus 31:3, He equipped craftsmen: “I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills”
He empowered judges and strengthened Samson when he faced a lion. The Spirit anointed kings: “So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.” 1 Samuel 16:13 The Spirit inspired prophesy and even spoke of His own future work at Christ’s second coming. Joel 2:28-29 records: ““And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”
