What Scripture Says About God’s Word

Speaking the Word of God is a core responsibility of God’s people whether done vocally or through action.  Studying His Word is the primary way you learn God’s truth to grow in wisdom, live His truth in love and obedience, and pass His truth on for the salvation of others.  In fact, you are commanded to study Scripture: “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”  2 Timothy 2:15. The greatest summary of the breadth and depth the Word of God is Psalm 119, with each of its 176 verses reflecting yet another facet of His truth.

God’s Word is necessary to grow in the wisdom and knowledge of God.  His instruction reveals His heart toward all mankind and gives you the discernment and strength to live out His teaching.  While His Word confronts your sin and convicts your heart, sometimes even to the point of despair, His loving mercy and endless grace comforts you.  “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:7

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  2 Timothy 3:16-17   Yet, you are both to live and teach in all humility; “to value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Philippians 2:3-4

Declare the gospel constantly in word and deed. Encourage others with Scripture. Do not be timid; speak boldly in great fervor with humility to awaken the sleeper. Someone’s eternity may depend on it.

You are charged with teaching others.  Nothing worldly is more important than the eternal destiny of each person. Christ commanded that each of us should “Go and make disciples of all nations … teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”  Matthew 28:19   Parents are advised “These word that I command you today shall be on your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your children.”  Deuteronomy 6:6-7

During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus confirmed the enduring nature and reliability of God’s Word.  "For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."  Matthew 5:18  For the fulfillment of this Scripture, John 1:14 declares: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  Christ Jesus has come to fulfill the Law and the Prophets.  Do you speak God’s Word?

What Others Ask

Q. What does it mean to speak the Word of God in spiritual warfare?

A. Ephesians 6:17 identifies the sword of the Spirit as 'the word of God' — the only offensive weapon in the armor of God. Jesus modeled this when He responded to each temptation with Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11). Speaking God's Word is not a formula; it is the act of countering lies with revealed truth, aligning your mind with God's reality in the moment of attack.

Q. How do I use Scripture effectively in prayer and daily life?

A. Begin by reading with intention — not for information but for encounter. Then bring what you read into prayer, speaking the words back to God. Meditate on key passages (Psalm 1:2), meaning to chew on them throughout the day. Apply what you read to specific situations. Scripture is not an archive — it is a living word (Hebrews 4:12) intended to shape every dimension of life."

Q. What does Ephesians 6 say about the sword of the Spirit?

A. In Ephesians 6:10-18, Paul lists six pieces of spiritual armor — only one is offensive: the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Unlike the others, which are defensive, the sword is used to actively contend with spiritual opposition. It is a precision weapon — the right word of Scripture for the specific lie or temptation being faced.

Q. How do I memorize Scripture so I can use it when I need it?

A. Start with verses that address your most frequent struggles or deepest needs. Write them on cards, repeat them daily, and speak them aloud — vocalization deepens retention. Use the verse in prayer the same week you learn it. The goal is not to impress with quantity but to have truth ready in the moment — like a soldier who knows exactly where his weapon is.

Q. Why is speaking God's Word out loud spiritually significant?

A. Romans 10:17 says faith comes by hearing. Speaking Scripture aloud engages both the mind and the auditory pathways, reinforcing truth at multiple levels. There is also a declarative dimension: speaking God's Word in prayer is an act of faith that aligns your will with His. Jesus spoke to storms, to the fig tree, to demons — the Word spoken with faith has power and authority.

Digging Deeper Introduction

The Word of God is God’s revelation of himself and His plan for the reconciliation of mankind.  In its written form, the Bible was “breathed out” by God, carrying His authority, power and purpose.  The Word, with God before the creation of the heaven and earth, also became flesh – the Creator dwelling amongst His created.   You cannot separate the written word of God from the living God.  Hebrews 4:12 declares: “For the word of God is alive and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.   Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.  Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

From the beginning when God spoke the universe and all that is in it into existence, the Word of God displays a unique unity.  Containing 1,189 chapter and roughly 31,102 verses, collectively written over 1,500 years by 40+ authors in three languages, Scripture itself testifies to its own  nature, function and power.  2 Timothy 3:16 records: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”  Studying the Bible is the primary way you learn God’s truth to grow in wisdom.   2 Timothy 2:15 commands: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

God’s Word is permanent and authoritative.  In Matthew 5:18, Jesus speaks to the permanence of Scripture: “For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”  Jesus also spoke to the authoritative nature of Scripture as well as to its life-giving qualities when He responded to Satan’s temptation.  Matthew 4:4 records: ““It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”  To further punctuate the authority of God’s Word, Galatians 1:8 announces a severe warning: “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! “
