Pillar 1 - Foundational Truths

Without Excuse

Scripture declares all are without excuse.

The universe, DNA, human conscience, and the moral law within every person all point to the same conclusion — and Scripture says they always have.

This is the truth in its simplest form — the same words printed on the inside of every Without Excuse Truth Card:

Do not move past this too quickly.
If this is true, it changes everything about your life.

What The Bible Says About Unbelief

Creation itself describes God’s beauty, wisdom, power and faithfulness.   The vastness of the universe to the most intricate detail of a DNA strand speaks with resounding clarity of the order, wisdom and purposeful power of His eternal nature.   Romans 1:20 states “His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived … in the things that have been made.”

The laws of nature provide harmony among creation.  The cycle of each day and the rhythms of each season speak to His faithfulness. The complexity of life points to His intentionality.  His provision reflects His love. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.”  Psalms 19:1

You are without excuse.  Unbelief is not an innocent or ignorant misunderstanding.  It is a moral rejection of the great ‘I AM’.  Look up, look down, look out, look within; you will find evidence God is there.  Everyone knows enough to seek God, but most choose to ignore or suppress the truth.    “They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.”  Romans 1:25

God’s very nature is holy opposition to sin and evil.  His wrath is not reserved only for “extreme sinners”, but for all unbelief that rejects His truth and rule.  God’s love demands opposition to whatever harms his created.  His justice requires a final accounting and judgment for each person.  And while He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to fulfill justice, bearing the punishment for all mankind, most deny Him.

Creation leaves you without excuse;

Christ leaves you with a decision.

What Others Ask

Q. Does God hold people accountable if they never heard the gospel?

A. Romans 1:20 states that God's eternal power and divine nature are clearly seen through creation, leaving humanity 'without excuse.' God has built into creation enough revelation that every person can know He exists and seek Him. The rejection of that light — not ignorance of a distant gospel — is what Scripture holds people accountable for.

Q. What does "without excuse" mean in Romans 1?

A. 'Without excuse' in Romans 1:20 means that no person can stand before God and claim they had no access to knowledge of Him. Creation itself declares God's existence and power so plainly that suppressing that truth is a willful act. Every person is accountable to the light they have been given.

Q. Can people know God exists without reading the Bible?

A. Yes. Theologians call this 'general revelation' — God's self-disclosure through creation, conscience, and the moral law written on every human heart (Romans 2:15). The Bible is special revelation, giving specific knowledge of salvation. But general revelation gives every person enough knowledge to seek the God who made them.

Q. Is it fair for God to judge people who never heard about Jesus?

A. God judges based on the light a person was given and their response to it. No one is condemned for not responding to a message they never received. What Scripture makes clear is that all have suppressed the truth available to them (Romans 1:18) and that God, as perfectly just, will judge rightly in every case.

Q. What is general revelation and how does God use it to reach everyone?

A. General revelation is the knowledge of God available to all people through creation (Psalm 19:1), conscience (Romans 2:15), and the universal human sense that life has meaning. It does not reveal the specifics of salvation, but it reveals enough about God's existence and character that seeking Him is possible — and refusing to seek Him is accountable.

Digging Deeper Introduction

The knowledge of God through nature is not obscure.  Whether you gaze at the night sky “counting” stars, peruse in awe the Hubble photos of distant galaxies, consider the complexities embedded in the double-helix of a single DNA strand or simply witness the miracle of birth, the existence of God is irrefutable.

John Calvin wrote that God’s essence is incomprehensible, but on each of His works His glory is engraved in characters so bright and distinct that none, however dull and illiterate, can plead ignorance as their excuse.

Modern science tells us that the universe shows powerful evidence of divine design by what is called “fine tuning”.  Simply stated, it means that the slightest variance in many of nature’s laws would make life as we know it impossible.  If gravity was just a tiny bit stronger or weaker, stars like our sun could not form.  If the power that holds an atom together was changed ever so slightly, life would not exist.  The universe is uniquely fine-tuned for what life requires.
